How To Read The Bible

BIble Study

We have received various questions by email and Social Media. Some can be quickly answered succinctly in a forum such as this. Someone asked us recently, “What is the best way to start to read the Bible?”

We respond first by stating that in our opinion, it is very important to get a core understanding and major concepts in the Bible first before tackling the Book as a whole.  For the sake of getting these core concepts into your mind and spirit while obtaining a general understanding, we would recommend the following.

First Things First.  We recommend that you start reading Gospel of John also known as the Book of John.   Take the time to read the Book of John all the way through.  If you see something that you find interesting, feel free to stop and take time to meditate on it.  In the Book of John, you will discover the fundamental concepts that will help understand who Jesus is and the nature of our relationship with Jesus.

Next, read the entire New Testament.  Start with the Book of Mathew and continue all the way through to the Book of Revelation.  (Yes, you will wind up reading the Book of John a second time.)

In the New Testament, you will discover that the books of Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John often corroborate the same stories of the events that happened surrounding Jesus, but told from the perspective of different eyewitnesses.  The remaining books of the New Testament are comprised of books and letters as written by Apostles, the brother of Jesus and other true spiritual sons in Christ. As a FYI, Apostle Paul wrote half of the New Testament.  In the New Testament, you will discover the boundless Mercy, Love and Grace that the Lord bestows upon us and all that accept and learn more about Him.

Next. Now that you have completed reading the New Testament all the way through, it is time to go and read the entire Bible front to back.  Now you can read it like a novel. Start with the Book of Genesis and read all of the way to Revelation.  In the Old Testament (Genesis through Malachi), you will discover that the origin and history of the Jewish people, the stories of significant issues

It traces the history of the Jewish people, the lineage, and bloodline through which Jesus Christ was born.  It encompasses the history, stories, and behaviors of the patriarchs. It covers concepts such as the nature and origin of sin, Atonement, and restoration.  It includes the history and discussion of many things that will help give you an understanding of why the Love, Grace, and Mercy as given through Jesus Christ is so important.  The Old Testament reveals the origin of Faith and why those who accept Jesus Christ are Jews by Faith.

As An Additional FYI, if you would like to increase your spiritual wisdom, read a chapter of Proverbs every day.  The number of books in Proverbs happens to correlate to the number of days in the month. By reading a chapter of Proverbs every day, it will afford you the opportunity to read the entire Book Proverbs 12 times in a year.  The Book of Proverbs was written by Solomon, Agur, and Lemuel. The Bible says that Solomon was the wisest man that ever lived.

God said to Solomon, “Because you had this in mind, and did not ask for riches, wealth or honor, or the life of those who hate you, nor have you even asked for long life, but you have asked for yourself wisdom and knowledge that you may rule My people over whom I have made you king, wisdom and knowledge have been granted to you. And I will give you riches and wealth and honor, such as none of the kings who were before you has possessed nor those who will come after you.” – 2 Ch 1:11-12 NASB

By reading the Book of Proverbs on a daily basis, you will be surprised at the level of wisdom that will increase in your life.  Learn to make this a daily habit.

And as you follow these instructions, please bear in mind the following scriptures:

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”  -2 Ti 3:16-17 KJV

Above all, be lead by the Spirit of God as you read. Again, if you read something that really strikes your attention, it is the Spirit of God trying to get your attention. Take the time to ponder, study it out, take notes and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Just make sure that you ask questions from a knowledgeable and anointed Bible Teacher or Leader that has a True Heart for following after the Lord.

We pray God’s grace upon you as you desire to learn more about God and His Word.  We pray this for you…

That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:

The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,” – Eph 1:17-20 KJV

An Apostolic and Prophetic View of God’s Process for Personal Growth and Ministry

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”

According to the Scripture, Romans 8:28 says- “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.”  The questions is, how do all these things work out to our benefit? God is a “God that declares “The End” from “The Beginning”.  However, we must understand that He is also a God of process. There is a process that takes from the beginning unto the end.
